The people we buy from.
Six neighbours, six small farms. The flour in our bread, the milk in our coffee, the lamb in our pie, the oil on our salad. All within a morning's drive.
42 km north Lamb
Suurbraak Lamb Co.
A small fourth-generation lamb farm in the Suurbraak valley, where the sheep walk the same fynbos slopes their great-grandmothers walked.
34 km west Goat cheese, feta & yoghurt
De Kraal Dairy
Liesbet milks her thirty-eight goats herself, every morning at five. The cheese is made by hand in a small dairy behind the farmhouse.
38 km south Raw honey & beeswax
The Honey Bee Lady
Sarie keeps a hundred-odd hives across the cape fynbos belt (Elim, Bredasdorp, Napier) and bottles each apiary's honey separately so you can taste the place.
210 km north (but worth it) Olives & olive oil
Olijvenkop Olive Grove
A small grove of 4 200 trees on the slopes of the Kasteelberg. Cold-pressed within four hours of picking, bottled the same week, sold out by November.
85 km north-west Stone-milled flour & grains
Skuinshoogte Stone Mill
A small stone mill turning since 1872, restored by Pieter's father in the 1990s. They mill what they grow (heritage wheats, rye, spelt, oats) to order.
95 km north-west Apples, pears & preserves
Elgin Apple Orchards
A working apple and pear orchard in the Elgin Valley. Sons and daughters of the family run the preserve kitchen: chutneys, jellies, applesauce by the jar.
Within a morning's drive
Five local, one a bit further.
Five of our six producers are within an hour of the padstal. The sixth, the Olijvenkop olive grove in the Swartland, is two hundred and ten kilometres up the N7, but their oil is good enough that we drive there ourselves twice a year.
